Beginners Guide to Indoor Garden

What's up guys, it's E! So, you’re wanting to build an indoor-at-home garden, or be a collector of indoor plants (whatever you choose to say). Becoming a plant mom or dad can be difficult, especially if you have no idea where to start, knowing the basics and what plants to buy first can *grow* your knowledge, and eventually turn your whole house into a jungle.

Let's start at the top and work our way down.

Which plant?

Knowing what kind of plant to pick out first can be a little… overwhelming… there are so many factors that go into keeping a plant alive: how much light does it need, the moisture of the soil, when do I fertilize it, do I need fertilizer… etc… Soooo here are some of my top favorite, easy, and low maintenance plants I own.

Peace Lily: You have probably heard of this beautiful plant multiple times, but let me tell you this plant is by far the most simple plant I have taken care of. The plant thrives off of water and can live off of indirect sunlight. I give this an overall 10/10 for new plant parents.

Snake plant: This plant is also known as a mother-in-law's tongue, I know it's strange. This plant is known for its air-purifying abilities, it only needs to be watered every 3-4 weeks, and can have indirect sunlight or low indirect sun. This plant is for extreme beginners who know absolutely nothing about plants because this can be a really hard plant to kill.

Golden Pothos: I do believe that right below peace lily Golden Pothos are one of the most beautiful plants out there. Similar to the peace lily, pothos thrives off of moisture and sunlight, even their leaves need to be misted 2-3 times a week. This plant can be tricker for beginners, especially if you're bad at remembering to water.

Jade plant: This plant is considered to be a lucky plant, so if you're low on luck this plant is perfect for you. One thing that can make a jade plant a harder plant for beginners is, you can’t overwater the plant but you also can’t underwater… let me explain, if you overwater the plant it develops rot root and it does exactly what the name says. The best way to know when to water it is to feel if the topsoil is dry, not the whole pot, just the topsoil. I would give this a 10/10 for everything but 8/10 for beginner planters.

Which pot?

Pot’s come in many different styles and materials, and some are more ‘breathable’ for the plant while others are just there for decor. I tend to go towards the hard plastic or terracotta ones. I choose these because it's easier to get rid of the excess water, so a key is to look for holes at the bottom of pots because most decorative ones don’t have this meaning you have to drain the soil yourself, and for beginners that a no go. The best way to go is to get a self-watering pot, just in case you tend to forget about dumping out the water.
