Hey guys! In keeping with the hairstyle trend this month I wanted to share 2 ways to curl your hair - one with a curling iron and one with a hair straightener. Let’s get started!
Curling Iron Curls
This look will give you classic ribbon-style curls.
Start by applying heat protectant to your hair (if you want to of course).
Then brush out your hair.
Section it and clip up the top sections (I usually do 3 sections, but if you have thicker hair than me you might want to do more).
Starting with the bottom section, pick up a 1-2 inch section and place it in your curling iron about halfway down your hair.
Twist the curling iron up towards your roots, and hold for a few seconds.
Then open up the clamp a little bit and slide down the rest of your hair.
Twist up towards your roots again, and hold for a few seconds.
Then release the hair from the iron.
Repeat until this section is finished, and then move on to the next section, until all of your hair is curled.
I usually curl my hair away from my face, but if you want a more relaxed look, you can alternate the direction of your curls. I also usually hairspray each section, and then after I let the curls cool off for a minute, I’ll rake through them and finish styling them. By curling the top half of the hair strand first, you are increasing the amount of time the roots are on the iron, which will help your hair hold the curl longer. Also, be looking out for this look on Instagram very soon!
Hair Straightener Waves
This is a more modern technique that gives you a textured, wavy look.
Start by applying heat protectant to your hair (optional).
Then brush out your hair.
Section it and clip up the top sections.
Starting with the bottom section, pick up a 1-2 inch section and place it in your straightener.
Twist your straightener as you pull the hair through the iron.
Repeat until this section is finished, and then move on to the next section, until all of your hair is curled.
As with the curling iron curls, I usually twist my straightener away from my face. Another thing to note is that you can change up the style of wave/curl you get by how much you twist your straightener. If you only turn your straightener a half-rotation, then you will get a very loose wavy look. If you turn it several rotations, then you will get a tighter ringlet look similar to the curling iron curls. I usually hairspray each section, and then rake through them and finish styling them after they cool off. This look is already on our Instagram, under the 30-Day Hairstyle Challenge highlight.
